I have a workbook in Canva where I noodle away on fantasy outfits that have almost nothing to do with how I dress on a day-to-day basis, and a lot to do with a secret project I’ve been working on in my free time (details soon, I swear).
And while I love a weird-hot fantasy outfit, my daily priority numero uno is to feel comfortable and present in my human body. My priority dos is outwardly communicating my taste level so that cool women smile at me while I’m out and about.
So let’s see how I did based on the outfits I wore + documented in June:
Stella McCartney Crepe Blouse 3 Ways
I bought this cream crepe blouse a while ago on Grailed after giving up on finding the black version I actually wanted. When it arrived, I felt how much it was a rebound, resenting it for not being the black one that had gotten away, and even considering reselling it. I reached for it a lot during an unseasonably cool June and feel like it’s…fine. Useful. The crepe gives the shirt a structure I appreciate. The outfit on the right is the one I feel is most successful. That brown skirt is something I wear often for sensory reasons, but it can make an outfit too “vintage girlie”. It gets a lift from the clean modernity of the shirt, the Tom Ford shades, and the Michelle Ross necklace.
Jersey Girl
Jerseys were a big thing for me this month, both for sensory reasons and for pure vibes. My husband is a sports guy and has a treasure trove of jerseys for me to borrow and play around with. I felt like I was really flowing with these pieces this month, and as a result, I like all these outfits.
On the left, I wore Hamilton, Ontario’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s jersey for a day in High Park (weeks later, he won MVP & led his team to a championship…connection?). It was an XL, so I twisted it around my bra straps to make a more flattering line & layered up that same Michelle Ross necklace with my late grandma’s long silver chains.
Next, I paired my husband’s childhood soccer jersey with my burgundy Aeron suit from Absolutely Fabrics and Chucks. Felt cool. Will repeat.
Finally on the right, I wore another soccer jersey with my Loewe harem pants (which my husband affectionately calls my poopie pants), my g-mas chains, and two of the things I own made of random old textiles (bag is Vitelli and shoes are Calla).
The Tom Ford sunglasses give Daddy and I have been reaching for them all month.
Poopie Pants 2: 2 Poop 2 Furious
I wear these pants all the time, so it’s less a sequel as much as it’s like how there are 100 Fast and the Furious movies now. Speaking of fast/furious, I was wearing this outfit when I saw an elderly woman get his hard by a guy on an e-bike. It was intense, and I ended up waiting with her for an ambulance for a wild amount of time (cops were there but not tending to her wounds, nor being very comforting). While we were waiting, she turned to me and said, “Right before I got hit, I saw you and thought ‘Those are some great pants.’ So at least I got to tell you that.” I love women.
I loved this outfit too. I have a personal connection to two of the best baseball caps on the market. This one is merch from my husband’s monthly comedy show Smooth Comedy. You have to go to the show to buy one, or message me and I’ll help you out. The second is the BAA hat from Baa Baazaar, the business I founded in a past life. Great shape, washed-out colour, handsome embroidery.
Red Dress
I got this dress last year while having a blissful weekend in Stratford, Ontario. I bought it from a cool boutique called Ande and haven’t worn it too much since. I think that’s because it has a very high waist placement, and I feel slightly triggered by it. On this day, I decided to power through. I paired it with this great acrylic necklace I got from the art market, which makes everything a little weird, my boat tote, and the jelly shoes I wear with almost everything.
…Fine
I wore this to work. It was fine. I love this shirt from Batik Boutik (similar), but I feel neither here nor there about the way I wore it here.
White Pants Entered The Chat
I thrifted these white pants, and I’m so glad I did. They’ve made getting dressed so much easier this month. Everything felt fresh and cool paired with these bad boys.
On the left, I paired them with this oversized shirt from Kowli and my grandma’s silk scarf to go pick up my daughter from preschool. On the right, I wore it with my husband’s vintage Orvis shirt and some cheapy Y2K sunglasses to go to work.
BEST IN MONTH:
This was my favourite outfit that I wore in June, and I think it does a nice job of sprinkling some fantasy dressing into my day-to-day. It’s giving Carrie Bradshaw before the styling got boring/overly aspirational, but also it’s giving…me. I wore this to work and then to my friend Aurora’s book launch party, and have never received so many compliments in my life.
The bolero, tutu crinolin dress, and white pants are all from Mrs Huizenga (& if you are in Toronto, they have another one in white where the tutu part is totally sheer. Run, don’t walk.
That little bolero! Cherry on TOP. Also applaud your dedication to styling in the summer. I dress up daily — but this heat has almost finished me off. Lots of repeats and no lipstick for days.
The color pairings on your Baa hats are so good!!
